Yesterday I explained how everyone learns in different ways. For many, there are barriers that prevent them from learning. Today, I will focus on some of those barriers along with suggested solutions.
Barrier: Language
Solution: Additional English classes. Simple texts; emphasis on visual learning materials; paired "buddy" system.
Barrier: Socio-economic, religious beliefs, cultural differences, level of support
Solution: Positive person assistance/support/advice. Paired "buddy" system. Extra training time.
Barrier: Poor sight, hearing, impaired dexterity, strength level.
Solution: Prepare seating arrangements; additional time to practice; pictorial aids.
Barrier: Level of education, type and extent of previous experience.
Solution: Check previous experience - can you use it? Support transfer of skills to new situation.
Barrier: Learning preferences. For example preferring theory to practice. Requires constant revision or practice and self pacing material to presentations.
Solution: Incorporate various training methods so that most can use preferred learning style. Encourage self management of learning but provide appropriate advice when required.
Barrier: Low motivation. Low interest. History of failure.
Solution: Counsel where necessary, identify and talk through motivational/attitude issues. Provide encouragement and relate training to work performance.
Barrier: Poor self esteem, loner, insecure about ability.
Solution: May be related to poor motivation. Use "buddy" system. Discuss preferred ways of learning. Encourage group participation.
