Internet: Iraq to set have .iq tag

Iraq is set to have its own internet domain name. Iraqi officials are in talks with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to claim the .iq tag.

Paul Bremer, former head of the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority. has previously told Icann that such a move would “signal to investors that Iraq is rebuilding for a high-tech future”.

Mr Bremer however, did not say if there would be anyone left to appreciate it.

InfoCo, A company in Texas had been granted the iq tag in 1997. However, in July last year, a federal court jury in Texas, convicted five Palestinian brothers who owned InfoCom Corp. of making illegal shipments of high-tech goods to Libya and Syria and making false statements to the U.S. Government.

Some of the brothers were connected to the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, an alleged Hamas financial front. They face a separate trial on allegations that they did business with a leader of the Palestinian terrorist group.
