Media: In Indonesia God is watching the watchers

In the last three months, television viewers in Indonesia have been presented with a wave of programs with God's name attached to their titles.

Soap operas focus on story lines that promise story line in which sinners will be punished by God. Punishments include burning in hell, eaten by flesh-eating worms or being swallowed alive by the earth.

Following the program, a preacher gives a sermon about what lies in store for sinners in the afterlife.

All but the state operated TVRI and news channel Metro TV, have programs, with titles such as Rahasia Ilahi (God's Secret), Takdir Ilahi (God's Design), Titipan Ilahi (God's Own) and Azab Ilahi (God's Wrath).

However, the motives may be more financial than spiritual. TPI a private broadcaster broadcast began the trend and saw a huge increase in advertising revenue as TPI's popularity surged.
