The Global Environment Facility is funding a project to conserve traditional medicine through the United Nations Development Program with Zimbabwe and Southern Alliance for Indigenous Resources (SAIRE), the co-operating partner.
The objective of the project is to promote the conservation, sustainable use and cultivation of endangered medicinal plants in Zimbabwe, by demonstrating effective models at the local level, and developing a legal framework for the conservation, sustainable use, and equitable sharing of benefits from medicinal plants.
Because of the high costs of conventional medicine, Zimbabweans rely heavily on traditional medicine.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF), was established in 1991, to help developing countries fund projects and programs that protect the global environment.
