Food: Russians love Skippy Snags

It seems that Russian consumers can't get enough of Aussie kangaroo snags.

A "snag" is of course a sausage and some parts of the world still insist on using that term. Why, I don't know - "snag" has a certain ring to it.

According to figures released by Austrade, almost a third of our kangaroo meat exports go to Russia where they are turned into sausages. Demand is so great that Russia needs four times more than we can produce.

Most of the meat goes to far eastern Russia where apparently the culture and difficult climate make kangaroo popular.

My American fiancee stayed with me at Christmas and we spent some time in a beautiful hotel in the Blue Mountains. I still remember her face when one night I ordered kangaroo sausages.

Try as I might, I could not persuade her to try even a little bite of what she called, "Skippy snags."

Yes - she said "snags." By George I think she's got it!
