Goodnight from Sydney

The end of another day!

The last few days my last post of the day focused on tragedy and human despair. Tonight's post is a little different - a look at guts and determination overcoming the odds - from a demographic that is widely and often unjustly criticised. Kids.

It is an Australian story but I am sure that geography will not be a barrier to understanding or appreciating what these kids have done.

A few weeks ago fire destroyed Kelso High School in the New South Wales town of Bathurst. It wasn't just a school - it was a focal point of the community. Not only were the kids High School Certificate projects destroyed - but also every prop and backdrop for their entry in the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.

To quote the events website: "it is a unique and exciting opportunity for schools to take part in a dance, drama and design spectacular where the students are the STARS. While the result is a professional event staged in some of Australia’s top venues, the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge is about encouraging participants to have fun while enjoying a 100% drug free experience."

It was devastating for the kids, parents and teachers who had worked so hard. But no one sat around feeling sorry for themselves - everyone pitched in to help. Local tradespeople offered their services and their staff. Tonight along with other schools they are performing in the open grand final at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

The school will perform 10 music and dance scenes inspired by the French Revolution.

Last years event sparked a minor controversy when one of the joint winners performed a brilliant piece called "Bad Night In Baghdad." (video clip).

To Kelso High School - and all schools taking part - good luck and enjoy!

That's it. Wherever you may be - be safe!
