According to an expert, 40 per cent of China's workforce will be middle class within 20 years.
Speaking at the Second China-Europe Senior Forum on Government Management, Lu Xueyi, a professor of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) said China's middle class currently only made up 20 percent, and 42.9 percent of the total work force is in the agricultural sector.
He added that China has yet to build a more reasonable social class structure featuring with middle class making up the majority.
Such a social structure would lead to relatively stable political and economic conditions, a good social order and a harmonious society.
