Training: Plan & Promote a Training Program - Gather everything together

By Mike Hitchen Consulting - the consultancy that puts principles before profits.

One of the things you will need to consider in the final stages of planning the training program is the type of assessment that will be arranged for the learners. The assessment will affect the plan because it may involve on the job practice assessments, an external assessment performing assessments, activities during training being used as assessment evidence etc.

Formative assessment occurs when assessment takes place over a period of learning or practice. Summative assessments takes place at the end of a period of learning or practice. Often, both types of assessment will be used to assess learners. The type of assessment chosen for the program will affect the grouping of activities in the training program and this in turn will affect factors such as the learner being away from work, coordinating assessment with the learner's job, making sure the relevant personnel know what is going on and time, cost and resource requirements.

As part of the plan for the program, you need to identify what the assessment activities will be,when they will occur, who will conduct them and what is required of the learner in each case. This is information that will be passed on to the learner at the beginning of the course and needs to be well researched.

Inform relevant personnel

Before organising training opportunities for staff members, you will need to inform all relevant personnel. Depending on the size of the organisation this could be just one person or several. Usually supervisors or managers of the learners and the HR department would receive the information, but there may be others.

There are two ways of communicating the information, verbally and in writing. If you do tell people verbally what is going on, it is wise to support that with written information so there is always a record detailing what happened. Write a short report to inform the relevant people about the program and the resources, costs, timeframe and people involved.
