Shipping: Bangladesh seaports rake in $130 million in bribes annually

Transparency International, reports that importers and exporters pay an estimated $130 million in bribes each year to be able to get their goods into Bangladesh.

According to the Bangladesh chapter of the anti-corruption watchdog, bribes "are collected at 37 separate points along the handling chain at the port, which processes 75% of Bangladesh's sea cargo".

Customs clearance accounted for $112 million in unauthorized transactions, while dockside loading and unloading cost them $6.8 million in bribes.
