Animal welfare: Animal smuggling costs Indonesia $1 billion per year

According to The Gibbon Foundation director Willie Smits, Indonesia loses about $1 billion per year due to widespread animal smuggling. The most popular targets for smugglers were birds of paradise, cockatoos, parrots, orang-utans, lizards and snakes. The animals are bought in Indonesia for about $16 but were traded at around $50,000 each in European countries.

Back in 2003, The Gibbon Foundation, said that smuggling of protected animals in Indonesia was valued at $1.5 billion a year, with Jakarta topping the list with $1.5 million per day or $547.5 million per year,
