Immigration: High-tech tests for immigrants to the Netherlands

Under a plan put forward by Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk, potential immigrants to the Netherlands must demonstrate their fitness by taking a high-tech examination in Dutch before being allowed entry.

The plan was presented to the lower house of Parliament an approved by a majority approved it, with the condition that test-takers will not be punished for technical difficulties during the trial period.

Candidates will be required to answer questions by telephone using a computer with voice recognition software and must show their knowledge of Dutch language and culture.
