Trade: Pakistan ministry favours granting MFN status to India

A report by Pakistan's Ministry of Industries has recommended granting of the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India, claiming liberalisation of trade would benefit Pakistan. Local media reports that granting such status would lower prices for domestic consumers and generate greater revenue for the government through taxes. Other benefits include reducing illegal trade between the two countries, and giving Pakistan greater access to Indian markets.

However, the commerce ministry is of the opinion that signing Safta or granting MFN should be done only if there was progress on the Kashmir issue.
