Construction: Mozambique signs contract for bridge over the Zambezi

The Mozambican government and Portuguese consortium Mota Engil/Soares da Costa, have signed a contract for the construction of a bridge over the Zambezi river. Work on the approaches to the bridge linking Sofala and Zambezia provinces began in the late 1970s, but was abandoned because of attacks by the apartheid backed Renamo rebels.

The 2.3 kilometres long, and 16 metres wide bridge is being financed by Sweden, Italy and the European Unity.
