In poverty stricken Kenya, 600 trucks carrying export goods worth millions of shillings, are stuck at the Malaba border waiting for clearance to Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. The backlog is the aftermath of last week's strike by long-distance truck drivers protesting at the killing of a Kenyan colleague in Uganda.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), predicts that it will take more than a week to clear the backlog of lorries seeking to enter Uganda and other countries in the Great Lakes region. Adding to the problem is the demand by truck drivers for better security before proceeding to Uganda.
The KRA claim clearance also depends on how quickly Uganda handles the entry process of incoming trucks.
