Fuel: $250 million of fuel smuggled each year from Bangladesh

New Nation (Bangladesh's independent news source), reports that three lakh tonnes of fuel oil worth US$ 250 million are being smuggled to neighbouring countries annually - mainly carried out from the northern border districts.

Energy Advisor Mahmudur Rahman told The New Nation, 1,20,000 tonnes less fuel was consumed between September and December last year in comparison to the previous year.He believes three lakh tonnes of fuel was smuggled to the neighbouring countries every year. He also claimed that he had seen smugglers transporting fuel throughout the border areas.
