The UN Integrated Regional Information Networks, reports that according to Johannesburg-based AIDS Law Project (ALP), workplace HIV/AIDS discrimination are still common in South Africa - even though the majority of business do have policies in place.
Chloe Hardy, from the ALP told the South African Broadcasting Corporation, "Employers are not following the proper procedures, and when someone reports back to work after being off sick ... they are told that their job is no longer available."
She warned that unless employers become more involved in the fight against AIDS, they will find themselves with a less skilled, more depleted workforce.
