Media: Global award for Niger famine photograph

The image of a starving baby in famine-ravaged Niger, has won Canadian photographer Finbarr O'Reilly the prestigious World Press Photo Award 2005.

The Bahrain Times, reports that the image (shown here), showing the emaciated finger of a one-year-old baby touching its mother's lips, was taken in an emergency centre in Tahoua in the north-west of Niger in August 2005.

Described as haunting, the photo has won the photographer who works for Reuters, $12,000 in prize money.
