Nuclear Energy: Japanese police raid company suspected of illegal exports

Japanese police have raided the offices of Mitutoyo Corp, a company alleged to have illegally exported machinery to China and Thailand, that could be used in uranium enrichment.

Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest daily, reported that Mitutoyo Corp. is suspected of exporting two three-dimensional measurement machines that can be used for uranium enrichment — a technology that can produce nuclear fuel or bombs.

According to Mikio Aoki, an official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, such equipment can not be exported without government permission.
