Oil and Gas: Lebanon to get Syrian gas in 2007

Ali Abbas, general director of the Syrian Gas Company, has said that Syria will begin supplying gas to Lebanon at the end of 2007.

Under the terms of a contract signed in May 2001, Syria agreed to construct a 24-mile pipeline to feed the Badawi power plant in northern Lebanon. Exports would increase during the first and second phases of the protocol, depending on the availability of Syrian gas reserves.

A Syrian oil expert told The Daily Star, "The intention was to start supplying the gas in February 2005, but political conflicts halted the discussions. At the moment there is not enough gas in Syria to fulfil the terms of the contract, but the new project (the Palmyra Middle Gas Energy Project) will produce 6 million cubic meters of natural gas per day".
