Environment: Tanzania bans plastic bags and containers

Tanzania, has put a ban on the import, manufacture and sale of plastic bags, and plastic drinking water and juice containers. Ali Mohamed Shein, the vice-president, said, "The ban of plastic bags and containers is necessary to protect our rapidly degrading environment."

The measures will take effect in October, enabling manufacturers and importers to find alternatives.

In related news, the government has also ordered farmers and people logging trees on Mount Kilimanjaro to leave the mountain within two months.
