Goodnight from Sydney

Tonight's photo: Similar to one I posted a few days ago, but I love the quiet "togetherness" in this shot.

Normally I try to finish the days posting on a light note, but just as I was getting ready to compose the final post of the day, an article regarding autism caught my eye.

Scientists have developed a device that basically alerts users when the person they are addressing is becoming bored.

Daniel Dasey, in the Sydney Morning Herald reports that the device "is aimed at helping people with autism - who can be unaware of the emotions of others - better understand the reactions they encounter in social interaction".

Researcher Rana El Kaliouby said the device, called the emotional social intelligence prosthetic, worked by analysing facial movements and gestures such as nodding, lip movement and eyebrow raising.

The unit consists of a lightweight miniature camera - which can be worn on the glasses of the user or in a baseball cap - an earphone, compact computer and a vibrating device.

Autism Spectrum Australia, an Australian autism group has given qualified support to the device.
