The Jamaica Observer, reports that Trinidad, is to hire 1,000 Chinese workers to help build a state-run aluminum smelter and train locals to run it.
The smelter - a joint venture between Trinidad and Sural, a Venezuelan company - will cost between US$500 million and US$700 million and would produce 155,000 metric tons (171,000 tons) of aluminum annually, said Clement James, spokesman for Alutrint, the venture's holding company.
Workers from the China National Machinery Equipment Import and Export Corporation will be hired to build the smelter and an industrial park, producing aluminum products such as cables, rods and auto parts.
