Goodnight from Sydney

Tonight's photo: The submarine and the destroyer, are part of the Australian National Maritime Museum display at Darling Harbour in Sydney.

The submarine is the Onslow, an ex-RAN Oberon Class submarine (1968). The destroyer is the Vampire, an ex-RAN Daring Class destroyer (1952). Clicking on the links will enable you to access a virtual tour of the vessels.

This morning I staggered out of bed at 4:45 am, headed for the kitchen, switched on the kettle and looked out the kitchen window. At that time of the morning it is still pitch black in Sydney, and hanging in the blackness was the biggest, brightest light I have ever seen in a Sydney sky.

I am used to seeing bright stars and planets - but this was unlike anything I had seen before. Even as blue pushed aside black to claim its place for the next twelve hours, it hung like a slowly diminishing beacon.

It was so bright I half expected to see three wise men come riding by on camels. Then I remembered that this was Lane Cove and camels would be less of a surprise than three wise men.

I was tempted to take a photograph, but the sight of me standing on the balcony in my short pyjamas, cigarette and camera in hand, may have caused the sugar gliders to sign up for the nearest support group. Anyway, it was bloody cold out there and a 5am breeze shooting up my pyjama legs is not my ideal start to the day.

If there are any astronomers out there - especially any in Sydney, I would love to know what it was I was looking at! As for the direction, it was roughly towards the north-east.
