Human Resources: Finnish paper producer to lay off 2,500

UPM-Kymmene Corp., the world's largest producer of paper used for magazines, is to close three mills and lay off at least 2,500 people in Finland over three years as part of a previously disclosed plan to improve profitability.

The layoffs are part of a cost-cutting program announced in March, when UPM said it would close plants and cut as many as 3,600 jobs worldwide - more than 10 per cent of its workforce - by 2008 in a bid to save $240 million US annually.

The Finnish Paper Workers Union has called for a two-day strike for next week in protest. Union chairman Jouko Ahonen said the strike would start Monday morning.

Good idea - that means they can all have a nice long weekend.
