International Development: Anti corruption group accuses Turkmenistan's President of embezzlement

British anti-corruption group, Global Witness, has accused Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov, of keeping most of his country's gas earnings off the books, depriving the national budget of revenues and fomenting economic instability in a restive region.

The group claim that the country makes more than $2 billion annually off natural gas exports but that "Niyazov keeps most of the gas revenues under his effective control in overseas and off-budget funds".

The report also stated, "It is hard to reconcile Deutsche Bank's role in managing Turkmenistan's money, which is under Niyazov's effective control, with the long-term interest of Germany in promoting stability in Central Asia".

Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the report.

I decline to comment on Deutsche Bank, as I have so many times before.
