African female lawmakers are meeting in Nairobi to discuss gender inequality and empowerment of women on the continent.
The three-day meeting is organized by the Network of African Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (NAWMP) and is being attended by female ministers and parliamentarians from Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Tanzania and Uganda, and female staff of UN agencies.
Ironically the meeting was opened by Kenyan Vice-President, Mr Moody Awori, who said that it was necessary that women be considered and appointed higher positions of responsibility where they can participate in decision-making.
He noted that the trend was changing and many governments including his own, are now appointing women to key positions in the cabinet, civil service and state corporations.
