Automotive: China's vehicle imports jump 80%

Figures released by China Customs yesterday reveal that China imported 87,000 vehicles (including CKD) in the first five months this year, an increase of 80% from the same period of last year.

Analysts reportedly said that rumours about the upcoming new consumption tax code stimulated the dealers to import a large amount of vehicles from abroad in the first quarter.

Since the code took effect on April 1, imports declined in the same month and the following May. But the amount imported in the first quarter has led to a significant increase for the first five months.
