Defense: South Korea to compensate forced draftees

South Korean government officials have said the government and governing Uri Party yesterday agreed to compensate South Koreans who were forced in to military service for Japanese troops during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea (1910-1945) and bereaved families with 20 million won ($21,000) per person.

The Korea Times reports that under the bill, the government would provide the money to those who were forcibly drafted into the Japanese military and families of deceased victims. Survivors would receive 500,000 won for medical treatment a month.
