Pakistan has unveiled a record 1.3 trillion rupees (USD 21.7b) budget for the new financial year (2006-07).
Defense was the big ticket item rising to 250 billion rupees (USD 4.2b), up from 223 billion rupees specified in last year's budget. The figure was later revised to 240 billion rupees because of overspending by the armed forces.
Minister of State for Finance Umar Ayub Khan said the special focus of the budget is to improve the socio-economic conditions of the common man by generating more job opportunities and providing improved social services including education, health, water and sanitation, village electrification and infrastructure development.
