Goodnight from Sydney

Tonight's Photo: Taken about an hour before posting. A cold, wet Saturday night.

I have come to the conclusion that I should stop watching movies. I came to this decision because according to all the experts, I don't know a bad movie when I see one.

It's not often I enjoy new or relatively new movies, but when I do, it appears the critics believe I shouldn't have bothered even watching it. If I think to myself, "Gee, that's a good bit of acting" apparently I am wrong. What I call talent, the critics call "flat" or "lifeless".

Take last night for example. I sat down, turned on the TV just to see what was on, and within five minutes of the movie starting I was hooked.

Now I have to admit, I should have known it was rubbish because it didn't star any of the icons of true acting talent such as Tom Hanks playing Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniseed doing whatever it she does in movies, or Brad Pitt looking like a schoolboy in his dad's trousers. Nor did it have full frontal bonking, gory murders, car crashes, or America winning wars single handed for God, Country, Mom and Apple Pie.

I had never heard of any of the stars, even though one was Australian - born just up the road from me. To me, it was a good old fashioned romance, which admittedly was a bit far fetched - but so what. I get reality in my every day job. Every time I turn on the news, read a newspaper, or monitor newsfeeds I get reality. If I want fantasy I either watch movies like this, or listen to an American General give a press conference.

And what was the movie? OK I will tell you - but you have to promise not to laugh.

Coyote Ugly.

I thought Piper Perabo gave a tremendous performance and the way she portrayed the relationship with her father, played by John Goodman, (who I normally do not like), was one of the best things I have seen from a "recent" actress. The dancing scenes and cinemaphotography were striking and very effective.

Yes, it was corny, it was schmaltzy and even predictable at times.

But it was far better than most of the crap movies and crap actors that win awards for having the best publicity machine.

Wherever you may be - be safe
