Nuclear Energy: Bulgaria close nuclear reactor for repairs

Unit 5 of Bulgaria's only nuclear power producer, Kozloduy, has been switched off for planned repair works. The Sofia News Agency reports "the planned works on the reactor include prophylactic and repair, as well as reloading with nuclear fuel."

Bulgaria has shut some of the plant's reactors under pressure from the EU, and should do so with the rest of the power plant in order to be accepted into the bloc.

A new nuclear power producer should open in Belene to take over from Kozloduy, but it would not be before 2013 for the first unit of the new facility to become operational.
