Agriculture: Saudi's runaway farm workers

Farmers across Saudi Arabia are complaining that foreign farm labourers are abandoning their jobs and absconding en masse leaving Saudi farmers in the lurch with no one left to work on their farms, according to a report in the Arabic daily Al Watan.

The daily quoted farm owners as saying in its recent report that they are suffering huge financial losses with much of their crops going to waste as labourers run away.

Government rules allow labourers to travel around the Kingdom without the approval of their sponsors and so many tend to leave and work illegally at other farms where they get better pay.
