Bilateral Relations: Slovenia to launch arbitration against Croatia over Nuclear plant

Reporter.gr reports that Slovenia is planning launch arbitration proceedings against Croatia over its alleged failure to secure funds for storing spent fuel and decommissioning their joint nuclear power plant in Krsko.

Slovenia and Croatia built the 670-MW nuclear power plant on Slovenia's territory in the 1980s, when they were still part of the socialist Yugoslav Federation.

The two countries signed an agreement to settle the ownership of the plant in 2003, making it a 50/50 joint venture of their state-owned power utilities. The deal also required them to set aside a total of 1.3 billion euro in a special fund to be used for storage of spent fuel and eventual decommissioning of the power plant.

"The fact is that Slovenia has carried out its duties regularly (it has set up a fund and has regularly put the required money in it), while Croatia has not so far set up a fund or paid the necessary money," Slovenia's Economy Ministry said in a statement.
