Trade: Tonga defers WTO membership

Tonga's Prime Minister Dr. Feleti Sevele has announced that Tonga has deferred membership in the World Trade Organisation for a year. The announcement followed 10 years of negotiations to join the body.

Tonga joined the body last December, subject to formal ratification. Sevele said the delay did not mean that Tonga was withdrawing its WTO membership application, but it needs more time to improve its tariff system.
