A new melon has been named in honour of Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov as the country celebrates "Melon Day."An official from Turkmenistan's food industry association told AFP "The new 'Turkmenbashi melon' is distinguished by its delicious aroma, excellent taste and large size."
The authoritarian president who calls himself Turkmenbashi, (Chief of All Turkmens) said, "All Turkmens celebrate this holiday. The Turkmen melon is the source of our pride, its taste has no equals in the world, the smell makes your head spin."
Turkmenistan's president makes my head spin at times. But then again so does another president.
Melons - bring them on.
