A former militia chief and media director who pleaded guilty to participating in Rwanda's 1994 genocide died on Tuesday. The announcement was made by the UN tribunal that convicted him.
According to media reports,Joseph Serugendo, 53, died of an unspecified ailment while under treatment at a hospital in the Kenyan capital, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) said in a statement.
The statement also said, "The tribunal offers its deepest condolences to his family."
Under the terms of a plea bargain, Serungendo pleaded guilty to two counts of incitement to genocide in exchange for charges of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide and complicity to commit genocide being dropped.
He had been accused of travelling throughout the Rwandan capital with other Interahamwe chiefs urging Hutu youths to kill Tutsis at road blocks and congratulating those who complied for their "good work."
