Goodnight from Sydney

Tonight's photo: I call this, "Always someone who wants to take a photo"

I have a new pair of headphones from Len Wallis audio. I am happy to give them a free plug because after four weeks of crap, "couldn't care less" service from Harvey Norman; electricians and electrical repairers, it was a pleasure to deal with a company whose customer service skills went above and beyond the call of duty.

Back to the headphones - they are my favourite brand and I am having great fun with a glass of Talisker, listening anew to much loved records. Songs I have known and loved since I was 13 or 14 sound so different and I think back to the days when I tried to make a pair of headphones by putting speakers in a set of industrial ear muffs!.

I close my eyes and I can feel and sense a life long ago. Take tonight's song snippet for example, taken from Elton John's classic album, 'Tumbleweed Connection'. I can see myself sitting with my mother in a booth in Spiller's record shop in Cardiff, persuading her to fork out the money for this album. Little did she know that album would remain with and part of me to this very day.

I listen to it and the years roll back. The insecurity; the lack of self-confidence; always standing just on the edge of the crowd; grudgingly accepted by my peers.

I was 14 and now I am 50. I have lived, fought and won. I have won battles with my health and though there may be more to follow, I will be in that ring cheered on by my friends - and the woman who won my heart.

I am 50 now, not 14.

Anyway tonight's song snippet - chosen because this has always been one of my favourite verses. From the song, "Talking Old Soldiers" Music by Elton John, Lyrics by Bernie Taupin. Copyright 1970 Dick James Music Limited

Yeah that's right, you can see me here most every night
You'll always see me staring at the walls and at the lights
Funny I remember oh it's years ago I'd say
I'd stand at that bar with my friends who've passed away
And drink three times the beer that I can drink today
Yes I know how it feels to grow old

Wherever you may be - be safe!
