Human Resources: University of South Africa accused of gender discrimination

Female employees at the University of South Africa (Unisa) would receive about 20 percent less medical benefit payout on retirement than their men colleagues, according to their trade union.

Accusing Unisa of gender discrimination, Jaco Kleynhans, spokesperson for Solidarity, said that "Unisa's decision is apparently based on the assumption that women have fewer dependants and that they can therefore manage on less money."

However, Doreen Gough, a spokesperson for Unisa, said it was unlikely that all women would receive less.
