International Development: Uganda initiates poverty elimination training program

The Ugandan government is to carry out nationwide training of sub-county personnel on the formation of Saving and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) aimed at fighting poverty. The $18 million project begins next month.

Microfinance Minister Salim Saleh, told local media the training would equip the leaders with skills to mobilize people for the formation of SACCOs.

Uganda has a budget of $42 million dollars this financial year, to be lent out to the local people in the villages to start up self help projects that will increase their household income.

It is not the first time a money-lending scheme has been initiated. A program called Entandikwa collapsed after it was riddled with corruption and non-payment of the loans.

I run training programs and I have a suggestion as to how the course should be run.

"Good morning all, the first thing we are going to learn today is that anti-poverty funding goes to the people - not into your bank accounts. Hey - come back - where are you all going? Was it something I said?"
