Women's Issues: Bulgaria increases maternity leave

Paid leave for pregnancy and maternity in Bulgaria is to increase from 135 to 315 days. The changes mean that mothers will receive 90% of their last salary, for a period of nine months after they give birth.

The head of the social parliamentary commission Hasan Ademov, said the Bulgarian government will offer babysitting care to assist the mothers in the first two years of their child life.

The changes will take effect from January 1, 2007
