Yonhap news agency has reported that up to 1,000 South Korean tourists were detained briefly in North Korea on Sunday after Cha Myung-jin, a lawmaker of South Korea's opposition Grand National Party, offered snacks and ice cream to a soldier.
The group was visiting Mount Kumgang, described by the Khaleej Times, as a craggy tourist enclave in the eastern part of North Korea.
The tourists were detained for some 40 minutes and were later released and deported home, reportedly after the South Korean side apologized and promised such unauthorized interaction would not happen again.
