Maritime Industry: Sydney's "Hungry Mile"

A little bit of local history for you!

Part of Hickson Road in Sydney, is to be named "The Hungry Mile".The area became known as the Hungry Mile because of wharfies who trudged the road looking for work during the Depression.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

"With unemployment at 32 per cent stevedoring companies could pick and choose from the sea of labour that stood outside the gates each day. It gave rise to the notorious bull system under which the biggest and strongest were picked for punishing 24-hour shifts, carrying sacks of wheat on their backs from the ship to the dock. Older and weaker men and trade unionists were left without work and a long walk back along Hickson Road".
