Religion: Calls for automated pedestrian lights for Orthodox Jews who are unable to press the button on Shabbat

Two councillors in Sydney's eastern suburbs councillors - Tony Kay and Isabelle Shapiro - are pushing for the introduction of two automated pedestrian lights on Old South Head Road.

Kay, a Liberal councillor for Waverley who is Jewish, said that automated lights would ensure pedestrian safety for Orthodox Jews who are unable to press the pedestrian button on Shabbat.

The RTA rejected a similar proposal by Kay two years ago on the grounds it would result in traffic delays and complaints from the wider community.
