Panama is to vote on Sunday to decide whether to expand the Panama canal.
The referendum calls on Panama's 2.1 million registered voters to decide on an expansion that would add a new set of locks to the canal's existing two, allowing two-way traffic, accommodating larger ships and almost doubling its transport capacity.
A poll last week showed that the proposal is likely to be approved by 79 percent of voters, but political and social groups have questioned the impact a larger canal will have on the poor.
