Panama is to vote on Sunday to decide whether to expand the Panama canal.The referendum calls on Panama's 2.1 million registered voters to decide on an expansion that would add a new set of locks to the canal's existing two, allowing two-way traffic, accommodating larger ships and almost doubling its transport capacity.
A poll last week showed that the proposal is likely to be approved by 79 percent of voters, but political and social groups have questioned the impact a larger canal will have on the poor.
