Women's Issues: Rape - whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat? asks Australian Sheik

Australia's senior Muslim cleric Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali, has apologised for any offence caused by his comments that immodestly dressed women provoke sexual attacks.

In a sermon to 500 people in Sydney last month, Australia's candidate for the Sensitive New Age Guy Of The Year Award, likened scantily clad women to uncovered meat eaten by animals.

In a city that is the centre of several high profile gang rapes committed by youths of Muslim background, he compared women who wore make-up, no hijab, dressed immodestly and who "sway suggestively" to meat that attracted cats.

"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?..The uncovered meat is the problem." He added, "If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."

His remarks have outraged the Muslim community and the Islamic Council of NSW has dubbed his comments as "un-Islamic, un-Australian and unacceptable".

In a previous post I mentioned that I have a little more tolerance for the Sheik than most people in Sydney. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that he is perusing his own agenda and not that of the Muslim community he represents.
