Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, has said Europe will only make progress if France and Germany maintain their close relationship and act as the motor driving the 25-nation bloc forward. He added that he had been wrong to think Britain could work with the two allies to drive Europe forward.
He was speaking ahead of the publication of the French-language version of his memoirs "Decisions - My Life in Politics".
Schroeder told Europe 1 radio, "There cannot be any real progress in Europe if Germany and France don't organise it together, don't agree on the direction to take -- that is political union, an integrated Europe."
He explained he was wrong about Britain, "because Britain continues to think in terms of empire and Britain also sees itself as a mediator between Europe and the United States".
