Women's Issues: Shia women win divorce rights

The All India Shia Personal Law Board, has unanimously approved a model nikahnama (marriage contract) that gives women the same rights as men for divorce.

Board president Maulana Mirza Mohammad Athar said, "Our model nikahnama, which has been approved by the highest Shia cleric of Iraq, Ayatullah Sistani, and constitutional experts, came into force today." He explained, "In this marriage contract, both bride and groom can put their conditions at the time of the wedding. The bride will have the right to demand divorce which she can use if needed."

However, there is a catch.

The Board can only publicise the nikahnama and it is up to Shia Muslims to follow it. "It will not be obligatory," Athar said, adding it would be implemented with the consent of both parties.
