Plans to extend maternity leave in Malaysia from 60 days to 84, have run into problems with several ministries opposed to the plan.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said several ministries disagreed with the proposal, as it would affect productivity and the workforce.
"Some ministries disagreed because they are afraid some organisations might stop hiring women due to the long maternity leave,” adding "So we need to review the proposal. Otherwise, women might not be employable anymore someday."
