China has signed economic deals with Eritrea and partially cancelled the nation’s foreign debt.
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met Eritrean President Issaias Afeworki on Saturday and discussed "future partnership endeavours", technical support and free trade deals, the information ministry said in a statement.
Li and Eritrean Finance Minister Berhane Abrehe then "signed three agreements regarding economic cooperation," said the statement published in the ministry's website.
"The concluded agreements include (a) zero tariff in items exported to China, China to partially cancel Eritrea's debts and China to extend technical assistance in different development projects, particularly in the health sector," it added.
