Human Resources: Nigerian workers list retrenchments and poverty as major issues

"Punch" reports that Nigerian workers have listed retrenchments and the high level of unemployment as the major constraints that affected the labour sector in 2006.

Ongoing Federal Governments reforms, especially in the public sector, had been hard on workers and had reduced their economic empowerment in the year under review, they claim.

President-General of the Trade Union Congress, Mrs. Peace Nkiru Obiajulu, also said many Nigerians were still living below the poverty level because of governments inability to eradicate poverty through job creation as highlighted by the International Labour Organisation and the United Nations Organisation under the Millennium Development Goals.
